HSTY 120 Unit 1 Responses

Evaluating Perspectives on Immigration

In the chapters we read from the autobiographies by Mary Antin and Jane Addams, each described the experience of recently arrived immigrants in the United States and how they assimilated (or not) within a dominant American culture. Compare their narratives—what do they see as the key factors in becoming “American?” Did their accounts differ in any way based on their relative position (Antin as an immigrant, Addams as a reformer working with immigrants)? In your answer, be sure to refer to specific evidence from each autobiography.

Your response should be approximately 500 words, and you should include clear citations when you refer to work from the course.

Autobiographies and the Historical Record

In the selection of Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography, we read about his work to found an Academy in Philadelphia (what would become the University of Pennsylvania). We also read the Proposal that Franklin drafted in the 1740s to pitch the Academy to potential donors and others.

For your response, you should analyze the Proposal and Franklin’s autobiography to compare the life that Franklin lived and the way he discussed that life in later decades. How did Franklin craft a narrative about his life out of the things he had done? Be sure to make specific reference to both documents in your answer.

Your response should be approximately 500 words, and you should include clear citations when you refer to work from the course.
